Post-Processing Labor

Account for finishing work and labor costs after printing

Overview

Post-processing includes all the work required after a print finishes. This is manual labor that takes your time and should be factored into your pricing. The calculator lets you track different types of post-processing work separately.

Job Removal Time

What Is Job Removal?

Time spent removing the completed print from the build plate and any cleanup of the printer bed.

Includes:
• Waiting for bed to cool
• Removing print from build plate
• Cleaning bed surface
• Inspecting for damage

Typical Time Estimates

Simple removal (no adhesion issues)0.05 - 0.1 hours (3-6 min)
Stuck prints requiring tools0.1 - 0.2 hours (6-12 min)
Large or delicate prints0.15 - 0.25 hours (9-15 min)

Tip: Track your actual removal times to get accurate estimates for different print types.

Support Removal Time

What Is Support Removal?

Time spent removing support structures and cleaning up the areas where supports were attached.

Includes:
• Removing support material
• Cleaning support contact points
• Using tools (pliers, cutters, knife)
• Light sanding of support marks

Typical Time Estimates

Minimal supports0.1 - 0.25 hours (6-15 min)
Moderate supports0.25 - 0.5 hours (15-30 min)
Heavy/complex supports0.5 - 1+ hours (30-60+ min)

Note: Complex prints with internal supports or tree supports can take significantly longer to clean properly.

Additional Work Time

What Is Additional Work?

Any extra finishing work beyond basic removal and support cleanup. This is where you account for premium finishing services.

Common Examples:
• Sanding for smooth finish
• Priming and painting
• Assembly of multi-part prints
• Gluing components together
• Adding inserts or hardware
• Vapor smoothing (ABS)
• Applying coatings or finishes
• Quality inspection and testing

Typical Time Estimates

Light sanding0.25 - 0.5 hours
Assembly work0.5 - 1 hour
Priming + painting1 - 3 hours
Professional finish2 - 5+ hours

Post-Processing Hourly Rate

Setting Your Rate

The default rate is $20/hour. This rate is multiplied by the total post-processing time to calculate labor costs.

Rate Considerations:
• Your local minimum wage (baseline)
• Skill level and experience
• Quality of finishing work
• Market rates in your area
• Tool and material costs

Suggested Rates by Work Type

Basic cleanup (removal, supports)$15 - $20/hour
Skilled finishing (sanding, assembly)$20 - $30/hour
Premium work (painting, detail)$30 - $50/hour

Tip: You can adjust this rate per calculation. Set it higher for specialized finishing work.

How It's Calculated

Example Calculation

Time Inputs:
Job Removal:0.1 hours (6 min)
Support Removal:0.5 hours (30 min)
Additional Work:1.0 hours (60 min)
Total Time:1.6 hours
Cost Calculation:
Hourly Rate:$20/hour
Formula:1.6 hours × $20
Post-Processing Cost:$32.00

Best Practices

Be Accurate with Time Estimates

Track actual time spent on similar jobs. Your estimates will improve and ensure profitable pricing.

Account for Complexity

Complex prints with intricate supports or detailed finishing should have higher time estimates.

Include Material Costs

If using sandpaper, primer, paint, or glue, add those material costs to "Additional Work" time.

Don't Undervalue Your Work

Post-processing often takes more time than expected. It's better to overestimate slightly than undercharge.
